## Who This Guide Is For

This guide is written for refugees, asylum seekers, and international students who are considering a Master’s degree in Germany and are interested in a DAAD scholarship that may cover tuition, living expenses, and travel costs. It is **not** a legal or immigration advice resource. If you have questions about visa status, residency permits, or legal rights, consult a qualified immigration lawyer or the German embassy/consulate in your country.

## Eligibility and Important Requirements

DAAD (the German Academic Exchange Service) offers several scholarship programmes that are open to refugees and asylum seekers. While the overarching goal is to support international students, each scholarship has its own set of criteria. In general, you should verify the following:

1. **Refugee status** – You must hold a valid refugee status, asylum seeker status, or an equivalent protection status recognized by the German authorities.
2. **Academic background** – A completed bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in a relevant field, with a minimum GPA or grade point average that meets the programme’s standard.
3. **Language proficiency** – Depending on the programme, you may need to demonstrate proficiency in German (e.g., TestDaF, DSH) or English (e.g., IELTS, TOEFL).
4. **Motivation and research fit** – A clear statement of purpose that aligns with the chosen university’s research focus.
5. **Health insurance** – Proof of health insurance coverage that meets German requirements.

Because each scholarship has its own nuances, always read the specific programme description on the DAAD website. If any requirement is unclear, contact the DAAD scholarship office or the university’s international office for clarification.

---

## What Funding or Support May Be Available

The DAAD offers full funding for many Master’s programmes, which typically includes:

- **Tuition fee waiver** – Most public German universities do not charge tuition for Master’s students, but some private institutions do. The scholarship usually covers any tuition that may be required.
- **Monthly stipend** – A living allowance that varies by city and programme, intended to cover accommodation, food, transport, and study materials.
- **Health insurance** – Coverage for the duration of the scholarship period.
- **Travel allowance** – A one‑time or periodic reimbursement for travel to and from Germany.

The exact amounts and the duration of the stipend depend on the specific scholarship and the university. Check the DAAD website for the most recent figures.

---

## How to Prepare an Application

### 1. Identify the Right Scholarship

- Visit the DAAD scholarship portal and filter by “Refugees” or “Asylum seekers.”
- Read the programme descriptions carefully, noting the application window, required documents, and selection criteria.

### 2. Contact the University

- Reach out to the international office of the university you wish to attend.
- Ask about the Master’s programme’s admission requirements, language prerequisites, and whether the university participates in the DAAD refugee scholarship.

### 3. Gather Academic Credentials

- Obtain official transcripts and degree certificates.
- If your documents are not in German or English, arrange for certified translations.

### 4. Prepare Language Proof

- Schedule and take the required language test (German or English).
- Keep the official score reports ready for submission.

### 5. Draft a Strong Motivation Letter

- Explain why you want to study in Germany, how the programme aligns with your career goals, and how your background as a refugee adds a unique perspective.
- Highlight any research experience or projects relevant to the field.

### 6. Secure Recommendation Letters

- Request letters from professors, employers, or community leaders who can attest to your academic abilities and personal resilience.
- Provide them with a brief on the scholarship’s focus so they can tailor their letters.

### 7. Compile the Application Package

- Follow the DAAD application checklist: personal data, academic records, language certificates, motivation letter, CV, recommendation letters, proof of refugee status, health insurance, and any additional documents requested by the university.

### 8. Submit Early

- Even though you cannot guarantee a deadline, aim to submit at least 4–6 weeks before the stated application window closes.
- Keep copies of all submitted documents and confirmation receipts.

### 9. Prepare for Interviews (if required)

- Some scholarships may require an interview with the DAAD selection committee or the university.
- Practice discussing your research interests, career plans, and how you will contribute to the academic community.

### 10. Follow Up

- After submission, monitor your email for any requests for additional information.
- If you do not receive a response within the expected timeframe, politely inquire about the status of your application.

## Common Mistakes to Avoid

1. **Submitting incomplete applications** – Missing a single document can lead to automatic rejection.
2. **Late submissions** – Even if the scholarship is still open, late applications are often not considered.
3. **Using informal language** – A professional tone in your motivation letter and CV is essential.
4. **Failing to tailor the application** – Generic statements do not resonate with selection committees.
5. **Ignoring language requirements** – Some programmes require a minimum score; do not assume a lower score will suffice.
6. **Not verifying visa eligibility** – Even with a scholarship, you must still meet German visa requirements.
7. **Overlooking health insurance** – Proof of coverage is mandatory; otherwise, your application may be incomplete.
8. **Not following the DAAD application format** – Use the templates and guidelines provided on the DAAD website.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### 1. **Can I apply for a DAAD scholarship if I am still in the asylum application process?**
Yes, many DAAD programmes accept applicants who are currently seeking asylum or have a pending application. However, you must provide proof of your status or the status of your application. Check the specific scholarship’s eligibility section for details.

### 2. **Do I need to have a German language certificate to apply for a DAAD Master’s scholarship?**
It depends on the programme. Some Master’s courses are taught entirely in English, while others require German proficiency. Review the language requirements listed for each scholarship and the university’s programme page.

### 3. **What happens if I am accepted but cannot secure a visa in time?**
The scholarship covers tuition and living expenses, but you must still obtain a German student visa. If you cannot secure the visa before the start of the semester, the scholarship may be suspended or cancelled. Contact the DAAD scholarship office for guidance on visa timelines.

### 4. **Is the DAAD scholarship renewable if I need to extend my studies?**
Renewal depends on the specific scholarship and the university’s policies. Some scholarships cover the full duration of a Master’s programme (typically 1–2 years), while others may allow extensions under certain conditions. Verify renewal options in the scholarship description.

### 5. **Can I use the DAAD scholarship to study at a private university?**
Yes, DAAD offers scholarships for both public and private institutions. However, private universities may have higher tuition fees, which the scholarship may or may not cover. Confirm the tuition coverage details in the scholarship information.

### 6. **What support does DAAD provide after I arrive in Germany?**
DAAD offers orientation events, networking opportunities, and sometimes mentorship programmes. Additionally, the university’s international office can help with accommodation, registration, and integration into campus life. Check the DAAD website for post‑arrival support services.

This guide is written for refugees, asylum seekers, and international students who are currently residing in Germany and are interested in pursuing a Master’s or PhD program funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). It does **not** cover:

- Scholarships for non‑refugee international students who are studying in Germany on a different visa type.
- DAAD programmes that are specifically for German citizens or EU nationals.
- Detailed visa or immigration advice beyond what is required for scholarship eligibility.

If you are unsure whether you qualify as a refugee or asylum seeker, consult the German Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) or a legal advisor.

## Eligibility and Important Requirements

### 1. General DAAD Eligibility

- **Nationality**: DAAD scholarships are open to students from all countries, including refugees and asylum seekers.
- **Residence Status**: Applicants must hold a valid residence permit in Germany that allows them to study. Refugees and asylum seekers typically have a “Residence Permit for Refugees” (Aufenthaltstitel für Flüchtlinge) or a temporary residence permit for asylum seekers (Aufenthaltstitel für Asylbewerber).
- **Academic Background**: A recognized secondary school diploma or an equivalent qualification that allows entry into a German university program. For PhD programmes, a Master’s degree or an equivalent is usually required.
- **Language Proficiency**: Depending on the programme, proof of German (e.g., TestDaF, DSH) or English (e.g., IELTS, TOEFL) proficiency may be required. Some DAAD scholarships are offered in English‑taught programmes.
- **Health Insurance**: Proof of valid health insurance coverage in Germany is mandatory for all scholarship applicants.

### 2. Refugee‑Specific Considerations

- **Proof of Refugee Status**: Applicants should be able to provide documentation confirming their refugee or asylum status, such as a residence permit, a refugee card, or an official letter from BAMF.
- **Special DAAD Initiatives**: Occasionally, DAAD runs special programmes aimed at refugees, such as the “DAAD Refugee Scholarship” or “DAAD Refugee Programme.” These programmes may have additional criteria, such as a demonstrated commitment to community service or a specific field of study related to humanitarian work. Check the official website for the most recent initiatives.

### 3. Application Timing

- **Application Periods**: DAAD scholarship application windows vary by programme. Some programmes accept applications year‑round, while others have fixed deadlines (e.g., January–March for fall intake). Always verify the exact dates on the DAAD website.

---

## What Funding or Support May Be Available

DAAD scholarships for refugees typically cover:

- **Tuition Fees**: Full coverage of tuition (if the university charges tuition).
- **Living Allowance**: A monthly stipend to cover accommodation, food, transport, and study materials. The amount is usually around €850–€1,000 per month, but exact figures differ by programme.
- **Travel Allowance**: A one‑time travel grant for the return journey to the home country after graduation, if applicable.
- **Health Insurance**: Some programmes include a contribution to health insurance, but applicants usually need to maintain their own coverage.

Because each DAAD scholarship has its own funding structure, you should consult the specific programme page for precise details.

---

## How to Prepare an Application

### 1. Identify the Right Programme

- Use the DAAD search tool to filter by “refugee” or “asylum seeker” in the eligibility section.
- Read the programme description carefully to confirm that it accepts refugees and to understand the specific field of study and language requirements.

### 2. Gather Academic Credentials

- Transcripts, diplomas, and certificates translated into German or English.
- Proof of prior academic achievements (e.g., a Master’s thesis abstract).

### 3. Prepare Language Proof

- Schedule and take the required language test (TestDaF, DSH, IELTS, TOEFL) well before the application deadline.

### 4. Secure Refugee Status Documentation

- Obtain a copy of your residence permit, refugee card, or BAMF letter confirming your status.

### 5. Draft a Strong Motivation Letter

- Highlight your academic goals, how the scholarship aligns with your refugee experience, and your future plans in Germany or your home country.
- Emphasize any community or humanitarian work you have undertaken.

### 6. Obtain Recommendation Letters

- Request letters from professors, employers, or community leaders who can attest to your academic potential and character.

- Provide a copy of your health insurance card or a statement from your insurer confirming coverage.

### 8. Review the Application Checklist

- Double‑check that all required documents are included.
- Ensure that all documents are in the correct format (PDF, scanned copies, etc.).

### 9. Submit Early

- Even though deadlines vary, it is wise to submit your application at least 2–3 weeks before the stated deadline to allow for processing time.

---

## Documents Applicants May Need

| Document | Purpose | Notes |
|----------|---------|-------|
| **Passport** | Identity verification | Must be valid for the duration of the study period. |
| **Residence Permit** | Proof of legal stay in Germany | Include the refugee or asylum status. |
| **Academic Transcripts & Diplomas** | Academic background | Translated into German or English if necessary. |
| **Language Test Scores** | Language proficiency | TestDaF, DSH, IELTS, TOEFL, etc. |
| **Motivation Letter** | Personal statement | Tailored to the specific scholarship. |
| **Recommendation Letters** | Academic/Professional endorsement | From professors or employers. |
| **Health Insurance Proof** | Insurance coverage | Must meet German standards. |

| **Proof of Community Service** | (If required) | For programmes focusing on humanitarian work. |

---

## Common Mistakes to Avoid

1. **Submitting Incomplete Applications**
Missing a single document can lead to automatic rejection. Use the programme’s checklist to verify completeness.

2. **Late Language Test Results**
Language test scores expire after a certain period (often 2 years). Ensure your scores are current at the time of application.

3. **Not Tailoring the Motivation Letter**
A generic letter may not convey how your refugee experience aligns with the scholarship’s objectives. Personalize each letter.

4. **Ignoring Visa and Health Insurance Requirements**
Even if you are a refugee, you must still comply with German health insurance regulations. Failing to provide proof can halt the application.

5. **Overlooking Programme‑Specific Criteria**
Some DAAD scholarships target specific fields (e.g., social sciences, engineering). Verify that your intended study area matches the programme.

6. **Assuming All Scholarships Cover Tuition**
While many DAAD scholarships cover tuition, some may only provide a stipend. Check the funding details for each programme.

---

## Frequently Asked Questions

### 1. **Can a refugee apply for a DAAD scholarship if I am currently studying in Germany on a student visa?**
Yes, refugees who hold a valid residence permit that allows them to study in Germany can apply. The key requirement is that the residence permit reflects your refugee or asylum status.

### 2. **Do I need to have a German university admission before applying for a DAAD scholarship?**
Most DAAD scholarships require that you have a confirmed admission offer from a German university. Some programmes allow you to apply before admission, but you must secure admission before the scholarship period starts.

### 3. **What if I do not speak German?**
Many DAAD scholarships are available for English‑taught programmes. If the scholarship requires German, you must provide proof of German proficiency (e.g., TestDaF, DSH). Check the specific language requirement for each programme.

### 4. **Will the DAAD scholarship cover my travel expenses to Germany?**
Some DAAD programmes include a travel allowance for the return journey to your home country after graduation. However, most scholarships do not cover the initial travel to Germany. You may need to arrange this separately.

### 5. **Can I apply for multiple DAAD scholarships at the same time?**
You can apply for more than one scholarship, but you must ensure that the deadlines do not conflict and that you meet the eligibility criteria for each. Be mindful of the time and effort required to prepare multiple applications.

### 6. **What happens if my refugee status changes during my studies?**
If your status changes (e.g., from asylum seeker to recognized refugee), you should inform the DAAD and your university immediately. The scholarship terms may remain unchanged, but you must keep all documentation up to date.

## Eligibility and Important Requirements

### Visa and Residence Permit

1. **Existing Refugee Status**
Refugees who already hold a residence permit for protection can usually study without a separate student visa. They must, however, apply for a *student residence permit* (Aufenthaltstitel zum Studium) if they plan to enroll in a full‑time program.

4. **Health Insurance**
Mandatory for all residents in Germany. Refugees must show proof of coverage that meets the university’s requirements.

5. **Financial Resources**
Even with a scholarship, you may need to demonstrate that you have sufficient funds to cover living expenses during the first months of study. This can be shown through a blocked account (Sperrkonto) or a scholarship award letter.

## Eligibility and Important Requirements

DAAD offers a range of scholarships, but most share a core set of eligibility criteria:

| Criterion | What it means for Middle Eastern applicants |
|-----------|---------------------------------------------|
| **Academic record** | A strong university performance (usually a minimum GPA or class rank). For master’s programmes, a bachelor’s degree that is recognised in Germany. For PhD programmes, a master’s degree or equivalent. |
| **Language proficiency** | • German‑speaking programmes: a recognised German language certificate (e.g., TestDaF, DSH, Goethe‑Zertifikat). <br>• English‑speaking programmes: an English language certificate (e.g., IELTS, TOEFL, Cambridge). |
| **Research proposal** | For PhD and some master’s programmes, a clear research idea that aligns with the interests of a German university or research institute. |
| **Motivation and fit** | A statement of purpose that explains why you want to study in Germany and how the scholarship will help you achieve your goals. |
| **Legal status** | You must be able to obtain a German student visa. DAAD does not replace immigration procedures. |
| **Nationality** | DAAD scholarships are open to students from all countries, including those in the Middle East. Some programmes may have quotas or special provisions for certain regions. |

**Important**: Each scholarship may add its own specific requirements (e.g., a minimum number of years of study, a particular field of study, or a partnership with a German university). Check the programme page on the DAAD website for the exact criteria.

---

## What Funding or Support May Be Available

DAAD scholarships generally cover:

- **Tuition fee exemption** – Many German universities do not charge tuition for international students, but some programmes still require a small fee that the scholarship may cover.
- **Monthly stipend** – A living allowance that varies by city and programme.
- **Travel allowance** – A one‑time payment to cover travel to and from Germany.
- **Health insurance** – Some scholarships include a contribution to health insurance.

The exact amounts are programme‑specific and can change annually. For the most accurate figures, consult the scholarship description on the DAAD website.

---

## How to Prepare an Application

### 1. Identify the right scholarship

- Visit the DAAD website and use the “Scholarships” search tool.
- Filter by “Country of origin” (Middle East) and “Study level” (Master’s or PhD).
- Read the brief description of each scholarship to see if it matches your field of study and language preference.

### 2. Understand the timeline

- Each scholarship has its own application window.
- Mark the dates on your calendar, but remember that the official deadlines are listed on the DAAD site.
- Start early: language tests, recommendation letters, and research proposals often take weeks to prepare.

### 3. Gather academic credentials

- Official transcripts and degree certificates.
- If your documents are not in German or English, arrange for certified translations.
- Some programmes require a proof of recognition of your degree in Germany (e.g., via the “Anabin” database).

### 4. Prepare language certificates

- Book your language test well in advance.
- Keep the official test result letter or a scanned copy ready for upload.

### 5. Draft a research proposal (if required)

- Outline your research question, methodology, and expected contribution.
- Align it with the interests of a potential supervisor in Germany.
- Keep the proposal concise (usually 1–2 pages for master’s, 3–5 pages for PhD).

### 6. Secure recommendation letters

- Ask professors or employers who know you well.
- Provide them with a brief on the scholarship and the deadline.
- Some programmes allow electronic submission; others require hard copies.

### 7. Write a motivation letter

- Explain why you chose Germany, the specific university, and how the scholarship will help you.
- Highlight any previous international experience or projects that demonstrate your readiness.

### 8. Complete the online application

- Create a DAAD account if you don’t already have one.
- Fill in personal details, upload documents, and pay any application fee (if required).
- Double‑check that all files are in the correct format and size.

### 9. Submit before the deadline

- Send the application at least a few days before the official cut‑off to avoid technical issues.
- Keep a confirmation email or screenshot as proof of submission.

---

## Documents Applicants May Need

| Document | Typical requirement | Tips |
|----------|---------------------|------|
| Passport copy | Valid for at least 6 months after the intended study period | Scan in PDF, high resolution |
| Academic transcripts | Official, signed by the university | Include all semesters |
| Degree certificates | Original or certified copy | Translate if not in German/English |
| Language certificates | TestDaF, DSH, IELTS, TOEFL, etc. | Ensure the score meets the minimum |
| Research proposal | 1–5 pages, depending on programme | Tailor to the German university |
| Recommendation letters | 2–3 letters | Provide a template or bullet points |
| Motivation letter | 1–2 pages | Focus on goals and fit |
| Curriculum Vitae | Updated, concise | Highlight relevant experience |
| Health insurance proof | Valid for Germany | Some scholarships cover this |
| Visa application documents | As per German embassy | Not part of the DAAD application |

Exact document lists vary by scholarship. Always refer to the specific application instructions on the DAAD website.

---

## Common Mistakes to Avoid

1. **Submitting incomplete applications** – Missing a single PDF can lead to automatic rejection.
2. **Late language test results** – If your test expires before the application deadline, you’ll need to retake it.
3. **Using informal language in motivation letters** – Keep the tone professional and concise.
4. **Ignoring the scholarship’s specific focus** – Some programmes target certain disciplines or research areas; applying outside those areas reduces your chances.
5. **Overlooking the visa process** – Even with a scholarship, you must still secure a student visa.
6. **Not confirming the application receipt** – Save the confirmation email or screenshot; it’s proof that you applied on time.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### 1. Can refugees from the Middle East apply for DAAD scholarships?

Yes, refugees and asylum seekers are eligible to apply for many DAAD scholarships, provided they meet the academic and language requirements. Some programmes may have additional provisions for refugees, but you should check the specific scholarship page for details.

### 2. Do I need to speak German to apply for a master’s programme?

It depends on the programme’s language of instruction. If the master’s is taught in German, you’ll need a recognised German language certificate. If it’s taught in English, an English language certificate suffices. Always verify the language requirement on the university’s website.

### 3. How long does the scholarship application process take?

The application window varies by scholarship, but the entire process—from gathering documents to submitting the application—can take several weeks. After submission, the review period may last from a few weeks to a few months. Check the scholarship’s timeline for specific dates.

### 4. Will the scholarship cover my travel expenses to Germany?

Many DAAD scholarships include a travel allowance, but the amount and whether it covers return travel can differ. Look for the “Travel allowance” section in the scholarship description.

### 5. If I’m accepted, do I still need to apply for a German student visa?

Yes. The scholarship does not replace the visa application. Once you receive the acceptance letter, you’ll need to apply for a student visa at the German embassy or consulate in your country.

### 6. Can I apply for multiple DAAD scholarships at once?

You can apply to more than one scholarship, but each application must be submitted separately and meet its own criteria. Be mindful of overlapping deadlines and the time required to prepare each application.
