## Who This Guide Is For

This guide is written for refugees, asylum seekers, and international students from African countries who are interested in pursuing a Master’s degree in Australia through the Australia Awards Scholarships. It focuses on the general framework of the scholarship and does not replace the official application instructions. If you are a refugee, you may also need to consider additional visa and settlement support that is separate from the scholarship itself.

## Eligibility and Important Requirements

The Australia Awards Scholarships are a flagship program of the Australian Government that supports students from developing countries to study in Australia. While the overarching eligibility rules apply to all applicants, the specific conditions for African refugees are outlined below. Because the program’s requirements can change, always verify the latest details on the official website.

### 1. Nationality and Residency

- **Nationality**: Applicants must be citizens of an eligible African country listed on the Australia Awards website.
- **Residency**: You must be a resident of that country at the time of application. Refugees who have been granted refugee status in another country may still be eligible if they meet the residency requirement in their country of origin.

### 2. Academic Qualifications

- **Undergraduate Degree**: A recognised bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) is required.
- **Academic Merit**: Applicants should have a strong academic record, typically a minimum GPA or class of honours that aligns with the university’s admission standards.
- **Field of Study**: The chosen Master’s programme must be relevant to the development needs of your home country, as outlined in the Australia Awards’ “Development Focus” section.

### 3. Professional Experience

- **Work Experience**: Some programmes require a minimum period of relevant work experience (often 2–5 years).
- **Leadership Potential**: Demonstrated leadership or community engagement is highly valued.

### 4. Language Proficiency

- **English Language**: Proof of English proficiency (IELTS, TOEFL, or equivalent) is required unless the applicant has completed an English‑language course in Australia or another English‑speaking country.

### 5. Commitment to Return

- **Return Commitment**: Applicants must agree to return to their home country for a minimum period (usually 3–5 years) after completing their studies, to apply the skills and knowledge gained.

### 6. Other Conditions

- **Health and Character**: Applicants must meet Australian health and character requirements.
- **Visa Eligibility**: You must be able to obtain a student visa (subclass 500) and, if necessary, a temporary graduate visa (subclass 485) after graduation.

> **Important**: The above points are general guidelines. The official Australia Awards page provides the most up‑to‑date eligibility criteria for each participating country.

---

## What Funding or Support May Be Available

The Australia Awards Scholarship is a fully funded package that typically covers:

- **Tuition Fees**: Full coverage of tuition for the duration of the Master’s programme.
- **Living Allowance**: A monthly stipend to cover accommodation, food, transport, and other living expenses.
- **Travel**: Round‑trip airfare to and from Australia.
- **Health Insurance**: Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the duration of the study period.
- **Settlement Support**: Some programmes offer orientation and settlement assistance upon arrival.

> **Note**: Exact amounts and coverage details vary by country and programme. Check the official website for the most recent figures.

---

## How to Prepare an Application

Below is a practical roadmap that separates general preparation from the specific application steps you’ll find on the official Australia Awards portal.

### 1. Self‑Assessment

- **Check Eligibility**: Confirm that your country is listed and that you meet the residency, academic, and experience requirements.
- **Identify Development Focus**: Review the Australia Awards’ development priorities for your country and choose a Master’s programme that aligns with those goals.

### 2. Choose a University and Programme

- **University List**: The Australia Awards website lists partner universities and available Master’s programmes.
- **Programme Fit**: Ensure the curriculum matches your career objectives and the development needs of your community.

### 3. Contact the University

- **Admissions Inquiry**: Reach out to the university’s admissions office to confirm entry requirements and any additional documentation needed.
- **Scholarship Coordinator**: Some universities have a dedicated Australia Awards coordinator who can guide you through the process.

### 4. Gather Academic Records

- **Transcripts**: Official transcripts from your undergraduate institution.
- **Degree Certificate**: A copy of your bachelor’s degree.
- **Proof of Academic Merit**: If required, provide class rankings or honours certificates.

### 5. Prepare English Proficiency Evidence

- **Test Scores**: IELTS (overall band 6.5+), TOEFL, or equivalent.
- **Alternative Proof**: If you have completed an English‑language course in Australia or another English‑speaking country, gather the relevant certificates.

### 6. Compile Professional Experience Documentation

- **Employment Letters**: Official letters from employers detailing your role, responsibilities, and duration of employment.
- **Performance Reviews**: Any available performance appraisals or commendations.

### 7. Draft a Strong Personal Statement

- **Narrative**: Explain why you want to study in Australia, how the chosen programme aligns with your career goals, and how you plan to contribute to your home country after graduation.
- **Development Impact**: Highlight how your studies will address specific development challenges in your community.

### 8. Secure Reference Letters

- **Academic References**: From professors or lecturers who can attest to your academic abilities.
- **Professional References**: From supervisors or community leaders who can speak to your leadership and impact.

### 9. Prepare a Detailed CV

- **Academic and Professional History**: Include coursework, research projects, work experience, and community involvement.
- **Skills and Achievements**: Highlight relevant skills, certifications, and awards.

### 10. Submit the Application

- **Online Portal**: Most Australia Awards applications are submitted through the Australian Government’s online portal.
- **Deadlines**: Check the official website for the exact application window for your country.
- **Fees**: Some countries may require a small application fee; confirm whether this applies to you.

### 11. Follow Up

- **Confirmation**: After submission, you should receive a confirmation email.
- **Interview**: Some applicants may be invited for an interview; prepare by reviewing your application and the development focus of the scholarship.
